I chose to do a dispersion effect for my Photoshop technique. I went to a dirt bike track with my friend and stood at the base of one of the hills and shot from there. I did it this way because I thought the movement in the pictures would work well with the effect.
Directions to get the effect: 1. Open a photo, preferably with a solid background 2. Duplicate layer (CTRL+J) 3. Hide the top layer and select the background layer 4. Select the lasso tool (L) and select around the model 5. Once you’re done right click and fill (MAKE SURE ITS CONTENT AWARE) CTRL+D to de-select 6. Make top layer visible again then select that layer 7. Select the quick selection tool (W) and select the entire model 8. Head up to the top and select refine edge; go in and refine as needed starting with the models hair 9. OUTPUT TO: layer mask-hit OK (The model will be on a separate background) 10. Duplicate top layer (CTRL+J) 11. Right click on mask-apply layer mask 12. Hide the middle layer 13. Rename your top layer ‘dispersion effect’ then CTRL+J to duplicate it again; name that layer ‘man’ 14. Select the dispersion layer and go up to filter-liquify 15. Make sure that the forward warp tool is selected 16. Begin to warp your model by starting from the models hair and pull out to the left or whichever direction your photo flows (this determines the size of the dispersion effect. Make sure to adjust your brush as you do it for more precise strokes) 17. When your done hit OK Hold ALT while clicking on the mask to fill the mask with black 18. Select ‘man’ layer then select mask at the bottom to fill it with white 19. Make sure that your foreground color is set to black then select the brush tool (B) 20. Select a dispersion brush of your choice 21. Open up the brush panel and begin adding the effect 22. Make sure to not only change your brush size but also rotate your brush frequently. You can even select another brush so that it doesn’t look like a pattern 23. Once you’re done select the dispersion mask 24. Make sure your foreground color is set to white 25. Start adding the second part of the effect with the same brushes you used before (TAKE YOUR TIME) 26. Select the top mask and make sure your foreground color is still white. We’re going to clean up. Select a small brush with soft edges-zoom in to start removing unnecessary parts of the effect 27. Create a new adjustment layer-select gradient map 28. Select whatever gradient-hit OK 29. Bring down the opacity to about 20% or whatever looks good 30. CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E to merge all visible layers
